Awarding body decides
Adjustment deadline.
TNHE Institute allows all learners to request reasonable adjustments under equalities legislation. This policy outlines the exact procedures that learners and staff must follow when considering reasonable adjustments and special considerations for any programme of study or qualification.
Key principles of this policy include:
No Extra Costs: No additional fees will ever be charged to a student in relation to an agreed reasonable adjustment.
Staff Responsibility: All staff involved in management, teaching, assessment, and quality assurance must be fully aware of these contents and relevant awarding body rules to advise learners properly.
A reasonable adjustment reduces the effect of a disability, enabling a candidate to demonstrate their true knowledge, skills, and understanding. These adjustments are designed to remove unnecessary barriers without ever compromising or affecting the integrity of the qualification.
Common examples of reasonable adjustments include:
Arrangement Changes: Modifying standard learning or assessment setups, such as granting a candidate extra time to complete an assignment or exam.
Material Adaptation: Altering teaching or assessment materials, such as using oral methods instead of written formats, or providing texts in larger fonts and specific colors.
Learning Assistance: Providing direct support during study and assessment sessions, such as an official reader, scribe, or specialized assistive technology.
What makes an adjustment “reasonable” depends entirely on individual circumstances, course requirements, cost implications, practicality, and effectiveness. External factors like health, safety, and the absolute need to maintain professional competence standards are also factored into the decision.
Special consideration is an adjustment applied after an assessment has taken place. This occurs if a learner was severely disadvantaged immediately prior to or during the test due to reasons entirely outside of their control. Typical examples include experiencing a sudden temporary illness, a severe accident, or an unforeseen personal emergency right before the assessment window.
Staff make every effort to identify learner disabilities during the initial enrolment and registration phase by reviewing student indicators and supporting documentation. Learners are strongly advised to inform the course team of any additional learning needs right at the start of their program to ensure assistance is ready.
However, if a need arises later, as student can still formally request via email to academics@tnheinstitute.com a reasonable adjustment at any point during their studies by talking directly with their tutor or program team. For adjustments specifically targeting an assessment, the formal request must be submitted no later than 10 working days before the assessment begins. All approved adjustments are tailored uniquely to the learner, must line up with the awarding organization’s official rules, and will be strictly logged on the learner’s permanent record.
Special consideration rarely applies to non-time-constrained tasks like standard homework assignments, or flexible assessments that can be easily rescheduled for a later date without disadvantaging the student.
To apply for special consideration on a timed or controlled exam, students must follow these guidelines:
Form Submission: Applications must be completed formally using the official Special Consideration Application Form.
Strict Timeline: Learners must notify their tutor or course team within 5 working days of the assessment, explaining the exact circumstances that negatively impacted their performance.
Learners must provide official supporting evidence to back up any request for a reasonable adjustment or a special consideration claim.
Acceptable forms of verification include:
Official medical reports or signed doctor’s letters.
Police reports or formal insurance claims.
Certified statements from relevant professional bodies.
Failure to provide clear, verifiable supporting evidence will heavily limit the amount of assistance or academic accommodation the institute can legally offer.
The Institute holds the sole responsibility for approving and executing reasonable adjustments related to day-to-day learning and classroom environments. However, any adjustment impacting an official assessment or exam must be approved in advance by the external awarding organization.
For special considerations, The Institute will review the student’s request and, if appropriate, submit the application to the external awarding body on the learner’s behalf. The external awarding organization makes the final decision on whether the claim is accepted and determines how the candidate’s performance will be adjusted or reviewed in light of the evidence.
If you are dissatisfied with an outcome regarding a reasonable adjustment or special consideration, or if you firmly believe the procedures in this policy were not applied in a fair, objective manner, you have the right to contest it. All objections to these decisions can be formally escalated using the official Appeals Procedure.
